Basic Metabolic Rate

Basic Elements

Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR) consists the base to build an individual body weight control program, either with decreased caloric intake, or with increase of caloric expenditure (exercise) or a combination of the two. Oxygen consumption values for BMR usually range between 0.8 to 1.43kcal/min, depending on such factors as gender, age, overall body size, and fat-free body mass. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) accounts for about 60 to 75% of total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), while thermic effects from eating account for approximately 10%, and physical activity accounts for the remaining 15 to 30%

Measurement Procedure

All energy-releasing reactions in the human body ultimately depend on oxygen use. Measuring a person’s oxygen consumption during rest gives us an indirect, yet highly accurate, estimate of energy expenditure. Indirect calorimetry is a relative simple way to measure oxygen consumption. A subject inhales ambient air that has a constant composition of 20.93% oxygen, 0,03% carbon dioxide, and 79.04% nitrogen. The change in oxygen and carbon dioxide percentages in expired air, compared with the percentages in inspired ambient air, indirectly reflect the ongoing process of energy metabolism.

Results

RMR is the minimum energy consumption which the human body consumes during 24 hours to sustain vital functions in the waking state. RMR, consisting of basal and sleeping conditions plus the added metabolic cost of arousal. BMR however, consists also the thermogenic effect of the food consumed, and in combination with the energy cost of any kind of physical activity represents the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Estimating the TDEE we can develop an on target individual nutritional program to control body weight and composition.

Instructions for the BMR assessment

BMR measured at least 4-6 hours after a light meal without prior physical activity. The subject rests supine for about 30minutes in a comfortable, thermoneutral environment; then oxygen consumption is measured for 10 minutes.
